The History of Religion

The religions of Morocco have been predominately two different religions, which is Christianity and Islam. However, the dominant religion for Morocco today is Islam. The belief of Islam is to give completely obedience to the leader or god Allah. Muslims believe in submitting to their God, Allah. The belief of Islam stands on the five pillars for the Muslims. The five pillars of Islam is the statement of faith, prayer, alms (purifying one’s heart from all greed), fasting, and pilgrimage (the must to Mecca at least once in a Muslim’s lifetime). The people who practice Islam worship at the mosque, which is the center of their worship. The nation of Morocco is home to many mosques throughout the nation, which are considered one of the most holy places to those practicing the religion of Islam. Muslims primarily make up the population of the nation of Morocco. Muslims focus on reading the Koran in order to help them practice their religion.

The nation of Morocco has focused on Islam as their religion since 670 AD when the Umayyads came. In 778 AD, Idris I founded the Idrisid dynasty, which was the first Islamic dynasty. However, as the years have gone by the people of Morocco have settled on the Alaouite dynasty rulers from King Mohammed VI. The rule of the Alauite dynasty began in the thirteenth century. In 1912, the treaty of Fez was signed and became the protectorate of France.  The people of Morocco have valued and still value the Islamic traditions. Morocco is considered one of the most holy places for many Muslims. The religion for Morocco has only changed in the aspect of adding on the views of Christianity and Jews, but the religion of Islam still holds 99 percent of the Moroccan population. The religion of Islam has influenced the increase of Christianity and Jews present. Morocco is home to around 100,000 Christianity and 8,000 Jews. The several Jews are mainly around the Casablanca and Marrakech area.
